TEST WHAT YOU HEAR

Not every voice that sounds spiritual is from God. Not every open door is His invitation. Not every strong feeling is the Holy Spirit. Scripture tells us plainly to test what we hear.

This is not a call to live suspicious and cold-hearted. It is a call to live awake. The enemy knows how to dress deception in religious language, and our own hearts can mistake desire for direction. That is why discernment must be rooted in the Word of God.

If a voice makes sin seem small, pride seem harmless, bitterness seem justified, or obedience seem unnecessary, it must be rejected. The Holy Spirit will never lead us away from Christ's character or the truth of Scripture.

Testing a voice may mean slowing down when everything in you wants to rush. It may mean asking mature believers to pray with you. It may mean opening the Bible before opening your mouth. Isaiah 8:20 gives us the standard: "To the teaching and to the testimony!" If a message does not speak according to God's Word, "it is because they have no dawn." Truth is not tested by how strongly we feel it, but by whether it agrees with what God has spoken.

Deuteronomy 13:4 calls God's people to "walk after the LORD your God and fear him and keep his commandments and obey his voice." That means deception does not always arrive looking obvious. It can sound kind, spiritual, freeing, or even compassionate while quietly leading the heart away from obedience to God.

This is why Scripture must become more than something we occasionally admire. It must be the measuring line. Hebrews 4:12 says, "the word of God is living and active," and that it discerns "the thoughts and intentions of the heart." It does not only expose false teaching outside of us; it also exposes false motives within us.

When you test a voice, ask simple but serious questions. Does this honour Christ? Does it agree with Scripture? Does it produce humility, holiness, love, and truth? Or does it excuse sin, feed pride, stir confusion, or make obedience feel unnecessary? God is not the author of confusion, and His Spirit will never contradict His Word.

Paul told the Corinthians in 2 Corinthians 11:14, "even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light." That is why we cannot judge everything by appearance. Something may seem bright and promising, yet still be leading the heart away from humility, holiness, and truth.

Discernment grows as love for truth grows. If we only want God to confirm what we already desire, we become easy to mislead. But when we truly want Christ above comfort, the Spirit trains us to recognise what belongs to Him and what does not.

Discernment also grows in community. God often uses mature believers to help us see clearly when our emotions are loud. There is wisdom in seeking godly counsel rather than trusting only the loudness of our own emotions. That does not mean every opinion is wise, but it does mean humility is willing to be helped.

You do not have to follow every voice that demands attention. You belong to the Shepherd. Let His Word be the filter, His Spirit be the guide, and His truth be the anchor.
