SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES

The Bereans listened with eagerness, but they did not listen carelessly. They received the message and searched the Scriptures to see whether it was true. That is a beautiful balance for every believer: teachable, but anchored.

We are not called to measure truth by personality, popularity, emotion, or how convincing something sounds. We are called to measure truth by the Word of God. Scripture is not an accessory to faith. It is the authority beneath our feet.

Searching the Scriptures daily takes humility. It says, "Lord, I do not want to be led by what merely sounds good. I want to be shaped by what You have said." That kind of heart is protected from many errors.

This matters not only when listening to sermons or teachings. It matters when making decisions, handling conflict, facing temptation, and forming opinions. God's Word must be allowed to correct us, not merely comfort us.

Do not be afraid to test what you hear. Truth can withstand examination. Open the Bible with a willing heart and ask the Spirit to lead you into what is faithful.

The Bereans were eager, but they were not gullible. That combination matters. A hard heart refuses to receive. A careless heart receives anything. A mature heart listens with humility and then brings what it hears under the authority of Scripture.

Paul later told Timothy in 2 Timothy 3:16, "All Scripture is breathed out by God" and is profitable "for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness." That means Scripture is allowed to correct us. It is allowed to challenge our feelings, our habits, our assumptions, and even the things we have always thought were right.

This kind of devotion to the Word keeps faith grounded. It protects us from being led by personalities, trends, emotional moments, or persuasive language. We can be grateful for teachers, pastors, and encouragement, but the final authority belongs to God.

Jesus prayed in John 17:17, "Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth." The Word does not simply inform us; it sets us apart. It cleanses our thinking, reorders our desires, and teaches us to recognise the difference between what sounds good and what is holy.

There is safety in becoming a person of the Book. Not a person who uses verses to win arguments, but one who sits under Scripture with a willing heart. The goal is not to know enough to feel superior. The goal is to be shaped enough to look more like Christ.

This is especially important when a message comforts us but never confronts us. God certainly comforts His people, but His comfort does not leave sin untouched. The same Word that binds up wounds also cuts away what is diseased. Both are love.

A life built on Scripture will not be easily carried away by every wind.
