AS MUCH AS IT DEPENDS ON YOU
ZECHARIAH 8:16 (ESV)
"Speak the truth to one another; render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace."
This call gives us both responsibility and realism. Peace is not always fully in our control, but our part before God still matters.
You cannot control someone else's repentance, response, attitude, or willingness to reconcile. But you can bring your own heart before God. You can refuse bitterness. You can speak truth without cruelty. You can apologise where you were wrong.
Sometimes living peaceably means making the first move. Sometimes it means not answering harshness with harshness. Sometimes it means keeping a wise boundary while refusing hatred.
The Lord does not call us to pretend every relationship is safe. He does call us to walk in obedience. Peace does not mean enabling sin. Peace means our hearts are surrendered to Christ even when the situation remains difficult.
Ask God what depends on you. Not what belongs to everyone else. Not what you cannot fix. Just your part before Him.
This verse is merciful because it recognises limits. Some people will not receive peace. Some situations remain complicated. Some relationships require boundaries. Scripture does not command us to control what only God can control.
But it also removes excuses. We still have to bring our own conduct before the Lord. Have we spoken with humility? Have we confessed our wrong? Have we refused revenge? Have we prayed for the person rather than only rehearsing the pain?
Jesus said in Matthew 5:7, "Blessed are the merciful," and Luke 6:36 says, "Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful." That does not erase wisdom or justice, but it does mean bitterness cannot become our home.
Matthew 5:44 gives a costly picture of this when Jesus says, "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." That kind of heart is not natural; it is formed by grace, surrender, and trust in the God who judges righteously.
Living peaceably may also mean releasing the demand that every person fully understands your side. God sees. God knows. You can obey Him without needing to win every argument or correct every accusation immediately.
Peace also requires prayer. It is difficult to keep hatred alive in the same way when we sincerely bring a person before the Lord. Prayer does not always change the situation immediately, but it often changes the posture of our hearts within it.
Do that faithfully, and leave the outcome in the hands of the God who judges righteously.
