POUR IT OUT

God does not ask for a polished version of your heart. Psalm 62 says to pour out your heart before Him. Not a controlled trickle. Not a religious performance. Pour it out.

There is something deeply comforting about that invitation. The Lord already knows what is within us, yet He still calls us to come. Our grief, fear, disappointment, confusion, and longing are not too much for Him.

Pouring out the heart is different from complaining into the air. It is bringing everything into the presence of the One who is our refuge. The heart may begin troubled, but it is being poured in the right direction.

Hebrews 5:7 tells us Jesus Himself offered up prayers "with loud cries and tears." He understands sorrow from the inside. We do not have a High Priest who is untouched by our weakness.

If you have been holding everything together, come to God honestly. Speak plainly. Weep if you need to. Sit quietly if words fail. Trust Him at all times, including the times when trust feels like all you have left.

Pouring out your heart is an act of trust. We do not pour ourselves out before someone unless we believe they can receive what we are carrying. God is not fragile. He is not overwhelmed by the truth of your heart.

Psalm 55:22 tells us, "Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you." That is not a poetic idea; it is an invitation. The burden that has been turning over and over in your mind can be brought into the care of the Father.

Sometimes prayer does not begin with eloquence. It begins with honesty: Lord, I am afraid. Lord, I am tired. Lord, I do not understand. Those are not faithless words when they are spoken to the God who is our refuge.

Pouring out your heart may also reveal what you have been carrying alone because you thought it was too messy for prayer. But the Psalms are full of messy prayers. God included them in Scripture to teach us how to come truthfully.

There is refuge in being fully known and still held by God. You do not have to edit your pain into something impressive. Come as a child to the Father. Come as the weary to Christ, who promised rest for your soul.

There may also be wisdom in pouring out your heart to a trusted believer who will point you back to Christ. God comforts directly, and He also comforts through His people. You were not made to carry every burden in isolation.

God is a refuge for poured-out hearts.
