THE HEART GOD CAN LEAD

The heart is never treated as a small matter in Scripture.

Proverbs tells us to keep the heart with vigilance because life flows from it. What settles in the heart does not stay hidden forever. It begins to shape the way we think, speak, choose, respond, desire, and walk.

This is why Scripture never treats the inner life as unimportant. A person can appear calm while resentment is growing quietly underneath. A person can say the right words while pride is still leading the heart. A person can continue functioning, serving, smiling, and showing up, while the inner life is becoming tired, distracted, or divided.

People may see behaviour first, but God sees the heart.

That can be uncomfortable, but it is also mercy. If God only dealt with what people could see, the deepest places would remain untouched. The Lord loves us too much to leave the roots of our lives unattended.

To guard the heart does not mean becoming cold, hard, suspicious, or closed off from everyone. It does not mean living afraid of every feeling. It means paying attention to what is being allowed to take root. Bitterness rarely arrives fully grown. It begins with thoughts we keep feeding. Pride grows when correction is resisted. Fear grows when we rehearse life without trusting God. Envy grows when comparison is entertained. Sin often becomes strong in places where it was first welcomed quietly.

But the heart can also be formed by truth.

Gratitude can grow there. Humility can grow there. Faith can grow there. Love can grow there. Purity can grow there. The Word of God can search, cleanse, correct, strengthen, and reorder what we could never fix on our own.

David prayed in PSALM 51:10 (ESV), "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me."

That prayer recognises something important. The heart does not only need better management. It needs God's work. There are things in us that cannot be healed by pretending, suppressed by busyness, or corrected by willpower alone. We need the Lord to create what is clean and renew what has become crooked.

Sometimes we try to change the fruit without dealing with the root.

We apologise for harsh words but never bring the anger underneath to God. We try to stop anxious habits but do not bring the unbelief beneath them into the light. We try to behave better while keeping hidden things hidden. But hidden roots eventually produce visible fruit.

Jesus said in MATTHEW 12:34 (ESV), "For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks."

That does not mean every careless word should leave a believer crushed under condemnation, but it does mean we should listen when God reveals what is underneath. Words can become windows. Reactions can reveal what has been stored up. Patterns can show what has been ruling within.

If something unhealthy has been coming out, do not only trim the branches.

Bring the root to God.

There is a reason Scripture speaks so seriously about the heart. JEREMIAH 17:9 (ESV) says, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?"

That verse humbles us. It reminds us that we are not always the best judges of our own motives. We can justify what God is confronting. We can defend what is damaging us. We can call something wisdom when it is really fear, or call something strength when it is really pride.

But the next verse says the Lord searches the heart. God is not deceived by what deceives us. He sees truly, and because of Christ, the believer does not have to hide from His searching. We can come into the light and ask Him to make us whole.

A heart God can lead is not a perfect heart.

It is an honest heart.

It is a heart that keeps coming back into the light. It allows the Lord to correct what is false, soften what is hard, and reorder what has become misplaced. It does not protect sin with excuses. It does not make peace with bitterness. It does not crown feelings as final authority.

Guard the heart by watching what you feed it.

Guard it by confessing quickly.

Guard it by forgiving where bitterness wants to grow.

Guard it by receiving Scripture even when it corrects you.

Guard it by refusing to make a home for sin in hidden places.

The wellspring matters. If the source is polluted, everything downstream is affected. But if the Lord cleanses and leads the heart, life begins to flow differently.

Let God go deeper than behaviour.

Let Him reach the place everything else is flowing from.
