TEACH ME YOUR WAY

It is possible to ask God for direction while still wanting our own way.

That is why Psalm 86 gives us such a needed prayer. David does not only say, "Show me what to do." He says, "Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name."

This is more than a prayer for information. It is a prayer for formation.

Sometimes the problem is not that we lack enough guidance. Sometimes the problem is that our hearts are divided. Part of us wants God's truth, while another part wants comfort. Part of us wants obedience, while another part wants control. Part of us wants holiness, while another part keeps making room for compromise.

A divided heart makes obedience unstable.

JAMES 1:8 (ESV) speaks of a double-minded man being "unstable in all his ways." Double-mindedness does not only affect one decision. It spreads. When the heart is split between God's way and our own, we become unstable in how we walk.

David knows he needs God to teach him, but he also knows he needs God to unite him.

That is humbling. It means we are not only dependent on God for the path in front of us. We are dependent on Him for the heart that can walk it.

"Teach me your way."

God's way is not always the easiest path, but it is always the truest one. His way may confront pride. His way may require patience. His way may call for forgiveness. His way may close doors we wanted open or open doors we feel too weak to walk through.

But if it is His way, it is good.

David says, "I will walk in your truth." Truth is not only something to admire. It is something to walk in. The Word of God is not meant to remain on the page while our lives go another direction. It is meant to shape our steps.

PSALM 119:105 (ESV) says, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."

A lamp does not usually show the whole road at once. It gives light for the steps in front of you. Many times, we want God to reveal the entire journey before we obey the next instruction. But walking in truth often means taking the step He has already lit.

Then comes the deeper request: "Make my heart undivided to fear your name."

This is where the prayer becomes searching. We need undivided hearts. Not hearts that honour God with words while holding back obedience. Not hearts that want His blessing while resisting His lordship. Not hearts that worship on one day and chase idols the next.

The fear of the Lord is not a light thing. It is reverence, awe, holy seriousness, and surrendered worship. It places God where He belongs and brings everything else under Him.

If your heart feels divided, bring that honestly before the Lord. Do not pretend. Ask Him to unite what has been scattered. Ask Him to make you willing where you have been resistant. Ask Him to teach you His way and form the heart that can walk in it.

This is a prayer we may need more often than we realise. A divided heart can hide under busyness, religious routine, or good intentions. We may want God's blessing while still protecting our own way. We may ask for guidance while quietly hoping He will confirm what we already decided.

The mercy of Psalm 86 is that David brings even the divided heart to God. He does not try to unite himself by willpower alone. He asks the Lord to do it. That is a humble prayer, and it is a hopeful one.

EZEKIEL 36:27 (ESV) says, "And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes."

God is able to form obedience from the inside. He does not only point to the path; He changes the people who walk it.

This gives hope to the person who is tired of being divided. You may have tried to force yourself into steadiness and failed. You may have made promises to God and broken them. You may feel frustrated by how easily your heart scatters. Bring that too. The Lord is able to unite what sin, fear, and competing desires have pulled apart.

An undivided heart is not a heart with no emotion or no struggle. It is a heart increasingly gathered under one Lord.

The God who gives light for the path can also steady the heart that walks it.
