Seeking a Better Country

The people of faith have always lived with a deeper destination.

Hebrews 11 speaks of believers who died in faith, not having received all the promises in full, yet seeing them from afar. That is not failure. It is faith with eternal sight.

In HEBREWS 11:16 (ESV), Scripture says, "they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one." Their hope was not limited to what could be gained, built, owned, or settled in this present world. They belonged to God, and that changed how they saw everything.

This is not a call to despise earthly responsibilities. Scripture calls believers to faithfulness in ordinary life. We work, serve, love, steward, build, honour commitments, and care for people. But we do all of it as those whose final home is not here.

That truth loosens the grip of many things.

It loosens the grip of envy because this world is not the full inheritance. It loosens the grip of fear because death does not have the final word. It loosens the grip of compromise because temporary gain is not worth eternal loss. It loosens the grip of despair because present suffering is not the end of the story.

To seek a better country is to live now in light of what God has promised.

COLOSSIANS 3:2 (ESV) says, "Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth." That does not mean becoming useless here. It means earthly life is governed by heavenly truth.

When the mind is set only on earth, disappointment can feel final. Success can become an idol. Comfort can become a master. People's approval can feel like life or death. But when the heart remembers the better country, everything is put in its proper place.

The world around us often teaches people to live as though this life is all there is. Get as much as you can. Protect yourself at all costs. Build your name. Avoid suffering. Chase comfort. But Scripture tells us we are pilgrims. We are not homeless, because God has prepared a city for His people. But we are not home yet.

That should make us patient and holy.

Patient, because not every promise is received in full now.

Holy, because we are travelling toward God, not away from Him.

If your heart feels too attached to what cannot last, ask the Lord to lift your eyes again. The better country is not imagination. It is the promised future of God's people.
