Strength for the Pilgrim Road

Some roads require strength that cannot be found in ourselves.

Psalm 84 speaks of people whose hearts are set on pilgrimage. They are moving toward the presence of God, and their strength is not in their circumstances, personality, plans, or ability to keep themselves encouraged.

PSALM 84:5 (ESV) says, "Blessed are those whose strength is in you." That is where the pilgrim road begins. Not with confidence in our own stamina, but with strength in the Lord.

There are seasons when life feels like a long road. You may be doing what is right, but still feel tired. You may be following the Lord, but still feel the cost of obedience. You may be carrying responsibilities that require daily endurance. You may be walking through a valley that has not lifted yet.

Scripture does not call that meaningless.

PSALM 84:6 (ESV) says that as they go through the Valley of Baca, they make it a place of springs. The passage does not say they avoid the valley. It says they pass through it. The Lord is able to bring refreshment even in places marked by weeping.

That is not sentimental. It is deeply hopeful.

God can meet His people in the valley without pretending the valley is not real. He can strengthen faith there. He can teach dependence there. He can produce compassion there. He can make bitter places become places where mercy is remembered.

The pilgrim does not stay forever in the valley. PSALM 84:7 (ESV) says, "They go from strength to strength." Not from ease to ease. Not from comfort to comfort. Strength to strength. The Lord supplies what the road requires.

This is different from self-powered positivity. Biblical strength does not have to deny tears. It does not have to sound impressive. Sometimes strength is simply continuing toward God when the heart feels weak.

NEHEMIAH 8:10 (ESV) says, "the joy of the LORD is your strength." Joy in the Lord is not the same as pretending sorrow is absent. It is the deep gladness that God is still worthy, still present, still faithful, and still the destination of His people.

If you are on a long road, do not measure God's care only by how quickly the landscape changes. He may be giving strength in the walking. He may be forming endurance that comfort never could have produced.

Keep your heart set on Him.

The road may pass through hard places, but the Lord is strength for His pilgrims.
