Where Else Could We Go?

There are moments when following Jesus becomes costly enough to reveal what we truly believe about Him.

In John 6, many who had followed Jesus turned back. His teaching was hard for them to receive. The crowd had seen signs and eaten bread, but when His words confronted them, many no longer walked with Him.

Then Jesus asked the twelve if they wanted to go away as well.

Peter answered in JOHN 6:68 (ESV), "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." That is not the answer of a man who understands everything perfectly. It is the answer of faith that knows there is no life apart from Christ.

This matters because confusion and surrender often meet in the same room.

There may be things God allows that you do not understand. There may be commands in Scripture that confront your flesh. There may be seasons when Jesus does not fit the expectations you secretly carried. Following Him will not always feel easy or explainable.

But the question remains: where else could we go?

The world offers many places to go. Go to distraction. Go to bitterness. Go to self-rule. Go to comfort. Go to anger. Go to the approval of people. Go to a version of religion that never requires surrender. But none of those places have the words of eternal life.

Only Christ does.

Peter continues in JOHN 6:69 (ESV), "we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God." Faith clings to who Jesus is, especially when the path is hard.

We do not follow Jesus because every question is answered on our schedule. We follow Him because He is Lord. We follow Him because His words are life. We follow Him because there is no salvation anywhere else.

ACTS 4:12 (ESV) says, "there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." That is not narrowness born from pride. It is truth revealed by God. Christ alone saves.

When the soul is tempted to drift, Peter's words can steady us: Lord, where else could I go?

Not to sin. It cannot save.

Not to self. I cannot save myself.

Not to the world. It cannot give eternal life.

Not to bitterness. It only hardens.

Christ may confront us, correct us, and lead us through roads we would not have chosen, but He alone has the words of eternal life.

Stay with Him.

There is nowhere better to go.
