Treasure Worth Everything

Jesus teaches us that the kingdom is not a small addition to an already full life.

In MATTHEW 13:44 (ESV), He says the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. A man finds it, and from joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

The striking word is joy.

The man does not sell all because he is miserable. He does not release everything because he has found a harsher burden. He has found treasure. The value of what he has discovered changes the value of everything else.

This is how surrender makes sense.

Without seeing the worth of Christ and His kingdom, obedience can feel like loss only. Holiness can feel like restriction. Sacrifice can feel unreasonable. But when the eyes are opened to the treasure, letting go is no longer empty. It is the response of a heart that has found something better.

That does not mean surrender never hurts. The things we release can feel deeply attached to us. Sin can promise comfort. Approval can feel necessary. Control can feel safe. Earthly security can feel like life itself. But Jesus teaches that the kingdom is worth more.

The man in the parable sells all that he has. We should not soften the cost. Following Christ means the whole life comes under His lordship. There is no hidden room where we say, "This part is mine." The treasure claims everything because Christ is worthy of everything.

LUKE 14:33 (ESV) records Jesus saying, "any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple." These are serious words. Jesus does not call people to casual attachment. He calls for surrender.

But again, Matthew 13 shows surrender through joy.

The Christian life is not simply losing lesser things. It is gaining Christ. Paul says in PHILIPPIANS 3:8 (ESV) that he counts everything as loss because of "the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord." The worth of Christ is not one value among many. It surpasses all.

Ask the Lord to show where your heart has treated lesser things like treasure. Comfort. Image. Money. Control. Old sin. Human approval. Your own plans. The goal is not shame for shame's sake. The goal is clearer sight.

When Christ is seen as treasure, obedience becomes worship.

The field may cost everything.

But the treasure is worth more.
