Returning to the Lord

The way back begins with the Lord's mercy.

HOSEA 6:1 (ESV) says, "Come, let us return to the LORD." Those words are simple, but they are not shallow. Hosea was written in the context of covenant unfaithfulness, sin, and the Lord's call to repentance. Returning to God is not a light matter.

To return means we have moved away.

That movement can happen openly through obvious sin, but it can also happen quietly. Prayer becomes thin. Scripture becomes distant. Conviction is ignored. Pride becomes normal. The heart still knows Christian words, but affection cools. We keep appearances while drifting inwardly.

The mercy of God is that He calls His people back.

Hosea does not present sin as harmless. The verse says the Lord has torn and struck down. God's discipline is real. But it also says, "that he may heal us" and "he will bind us up." The Lord's correction is not the cruelty of an enemy. It is the holy mercy of God bringing His people back from destruction.

That is difficult but good.

Sometimes we want healing without honesty. We want restoration without confession. We want comfort without the wound being exposed. But the Lord loves too truly to leave sin unnamed. He wounds in order to heal. He brings truth in order to restore.

JEREMIAH 31:18 (ESV) says, "bring me back that I may be restored." The heart that returns to God is not trusting its own strength to repair itself. It is crying out for the Lord's restoring mercy.

Returning to the Lord is not only emotional regret. It is turning back to Him in truth. It may include confession, apology, cutting off compromise, rebuilding neglected habits, seeking counsel, or obeying in an area we have delayed.

But the hope is not in the quality of our return. The hope is in the character of the Lord.

HOSEA 6:3 (ESV) says, "Let us know; let us press on to know the LORD." Repentance brings us back into pursuit. We return not merely to relief, but to God Himself.

If you have drifted, do not decorate the distance. Name it before the Lord. Come back through Christ. There is mercy for repentant sinners.

The Lord who exposes also heals.
