Rend Your Heart

God is not fooled by outward religion.

In JOEL 2:13 (ESV), the Lord says, "rend your hearts and not your garments." In the Old Testament, tearing garments could be an outward sign of grief, repentance, or distress. But God makes clear that the outward sign is not enough if the heart remains untouched.

This is a word every generation needs.

It is possible to look serious about God while resisting Him inwardly. It is possible to say the right phrases, attend the right gatherings, post the right verses, and still keep the heart hard. The Lord is not seeking performance that leaves the inner life unchanged.

He calls for the heart.

JOEL 2:12 (ESV) says, "return to me with all your heart." Not part of the heart. Not a religious moment while keeping sin protected. Not a surface change designed to quiet conviction. All your heart.

That kind of repentance is not produced by embarrassment alone. Embarrassment hates being exposed. Godly repentance hates sin because it has offended the Lord. Embarrassment wants the consequences removed. Repentance wants fellowship restored and holiness renewed.

Joel anchors the call to return in the character of God: "for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love." This does not make repentance less serious. It makes repentance possible.

If God were not merciful, sinners would have no hope. But because He is gracious, the call to return is not hopeless. It is an open door of mercy.

PSALM 51:17 (ESV) says, "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit." David understood that God desires truth in the inward being. Sin cannot be covered by religious activity. The heart must be brought low before God.

This can feel painful because the heart often protects itself. We justify, minimize, blame, compare, and explain. We would rather tear garments than surrender the places we have kept from the Lord.

But God wounds pride to bring healing.

Do not settle for the appearance of repentance. Let the Lord search deeper. Where has your heart grown hard? Where have you learned to sound spiritual while resisting obedience? Where have you wanted forgiveness without change?

Christ did not die to create people who only look clean on the outside. He saves and transforms.

Bring Him the real heart.

Not the edited version.

Not the religious version.

The real one.

The Lord is gracious and merciful, and He knows how to restore what is truly surrendered to Him.
