The Lord Rejoices Over You

Some truths are almost too tender for the heart to receive.

ZEPHANIAH 3:17 (ESV) says, "The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save." The verse continues with the Lord rejoicing over His people, quieting them by His love, and exulting over them with loud singing.

This is not sentimental religion. Zephaniah contains serious warnings of judgment. Sin is not treated lightly. But against that backdrop, the promise of restoration shines with even greater beauty. The holy God who judges sin is also mighty to save.

That balance matters.

Some people only imagine God as distant, cold, and displeased. Others speak of His love in a way that ignores holiness. Scripture gives us neither distortion. The Lord is holy, and His love is not weak. The Lord is merciful, and His mercy does not make sin harmless.

For those restored by His grace, Zephaniah 3:17 reveals a God who is present with His people.

"The LORD your God is in your midst."

Not far away. Not unaware. Not uninterested. The Lord is with His people as the mighty Savior.

This finds its fullest hope in Christ. Jesus came to save His people from their sins. Through Him, sinners are not merely tolerated at a distance. They are brought near to God.

EPHESIANS 2:13 (ESV) says, "But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ." Nearness to God is not earned by emotional effort. It is given through the blood of Jesus.

That means the believer does not need to live as though God's love is fragile and always about to disappear. Conviction should lead us to repentance, but condemnation should not be allowed to rule where Christ has cleansed.

The verse says the Lord will quiet His people by His love. There are fears that only the love of God can silence. Fear of being forgotten. Fear of being beyond mercy. Fear that weakness has disqualified us from His care. Fear that our story is only tolerated, never held.

The gospel speaks a better word.

The Lord is not embarrassed by the people He saves.

He rejoices over His redeemed.

If you belong to Christ, do not measure God's love by the instability of your feelings. Look to His Word. Look to the cross. Look to the Savior who brings the far off near.

The mighty One is not only able to save.

He is present with His people.
