Give Thanks in Everything

Thanksgiving is not only for easy seasons.

1 THESSALONIANS 5:18 (ESV) says, "give thanks in all circumstances." It does not say give thanks for evil as though evil is good. It does not say grief should be called pleasant or suffering should be denied. It says give thanks in all circumstances, because the worthiness of God is not limited to comfortable moments.

That distinction matters.

Biblical thanksgiving is not pretending. It is worship that tells the truth about God even while life is complicated. God is faithful in joy and in sorrow. He is sovereign when plans work and when they fall apart. He is near when the heart feels full and when the heart feels tired.

The verse says this is God's will "in Christ Jesus" for His people. Thanksgiving is not disconnected from the gospel. In Christ, believers have mercy that circumstances cannot erase. Forgiveness, adoption, eternal hope, the presence of God, and the promise of resurrection are not fragile gifts.

That does not make daily pain small. It gives the soul a deeper place to stand.

Some thanksgiving is immediate. A clear provision. An answered prayer. A restored relationship. A burden lifted. We should not rush past these gifts. JAMES 1:17 (ESV) says, "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above." Gratitude receives gifts without acting as though they were accidents.

But some thanksgiving is costly. It rises while the answer is still unseen. It says, "Lord, I do not understand this, but You are still faithful." It says, "This hurts, but You have not stopped being good." It says, "I can name the pain and still bless Your name."

This kind of thanksgiving guards the heart from entitlement. Entitlement notices what is missing and forgets what has been given. Thanksgiving remembers mercy. It trains the soul to see the hand of God in ordinary provision and sustaining grace.

If you struggle to give thanks, begin with what Scripture says is certain. Thank God for Christ. Thank Him for the cross. Thank Him for mercy. Thank Him that He does not change. Thank Him that His Word is true. Thank Him for grace to take the next faithful step.

Thanksgiving may not change the circumstance immediately.

But it does reorient the heart before God.

And a heart reoriented toward God is being rescued from the lie that only ease can produce worship.
