Enter His Gates With Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a way of coming before God with open eyes.

PSALM 100:4 (ESV) says, "Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise!" The psalm calls the people of God to glad worship, not because life is always easy, but because the Lord is God.

The foundation comes earlier in the psalm: "It is he who made us, and we are his." We are not self-made. We do not belong to ourselves. Our breath, salvation, calling, and daily mercies come from the Lord.

That truth humbles pride and strengthens gratitude.

Pride says, "I built this." Gratitude says, "God has been merciful." Pride says, "I deserve more." Gratitude says, "Every good gift is grace." Pride says, "I belong to myself." Worship says, "We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture."

Thanksgiving reminds us who God is and who we are.

PSALM 100:5 (ESV) says, "For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever." The command to give thanks is rooted in God's character. We do not have to invent reasons out of thin air. The Lord is good. His steadfast love endures. His faithfulness continues.

That means thanksgiving can begin before every emotional knot is untangled. You may still have questions. You may still be waiting. You may still be healing. Yet the Lord's goodness has not become untrue.

There is also discipline in thanksgiving. The heart does not always drift naturally toward praise. It often drifts toward complaint, comparison, or forgetfulness. Thanksgiving brings the heart back into alignment with truth.

This is not about denying hard things. The Psalms are full of lament as well as praise. God welcomes honest cries. But honest sorrow and thanksgiving can live together because the Lord is present in both.

HEBREWS 12:28 (ESV) says, "let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken." That gratitude is deep because the gift is eternal. Earthly circumstances may shake, but the kingdom Christ gives cannot be shaken.

So enter with thanksgiving. Not as performance. Not as pressure to sound happy. Come remembering who made you, who keeps you, who redeemed you, and who remains faithful.

Thanksgiving is not the doorway into pretending.

It is the doorway into truth-filled worship.

The Lord is good.

His steadfast love endures forever.
