The Lord Is My Helper

The believer's courage is rooted in the presence of God.

HEBREWS 13:5 (ESV) says, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." Then the next verse responds, "The Lord is my helper; I will not fear." The command not to love money and the call to contentment are tied to the promise that God will not abandon His people.

That matters because fear often hides beneath discontentment.

We fear not having enough. We fear being left alone. We fear losing security. We fear what people can do. We fear the future if the visible supports are removed. But Hebrews brings the heart back to the Lord Himself.

He does not merely give help.

He is helper.

This does not mean believers will never face loss, hardship, opposition, or need. The verse does not promise a life free from pressure. It promises the presence and help of God. That is better than false security.

Human support can be a gift, but it is not ultimate. Money can be useful, but it is not saviour. People's approval can change, but the Lord does not forsake His own. When the heart knows this, courage begins to rise.

PSALM 118:6 (ESV) says, "The LORD is on my side; I will not fear." Hebrews echoes that confidence. The people of God have always needed to remember that fear shrinks when the Lord is seen rightly.

Still, this must be handled carefully. "What can man do to me?" does not mean people cannot cause real pain. Scripture never mocks suffering. The point is that human power is limited before the eternal God. No person can separate the believer from Christ. No threat is greater than the Lord's authority.

That truth steadies obedience.

If fear of people controls us, we may compromise truth, hide faithfulness, flatter sin, or avoid costly obedience. But when the Lord is our helper, we are freed to obey Him above the pressure of man.

GALATIANS 1:10 (ESV) asks whether Paul is seeking the approval of man or of God. A servant of Christ cannot be ruled by the fear of human opinion.

The Lord's help may come through strength to endure, wisdom to answer, provision for need, courage to stand, or peace in the middle of uncertainty. He knows what help is needed.

So do not let fear tell you that you are abandoned.

The Lord is your helper.

He has not left.
