Help From the Maker of Heaven

Where you look for help matters.

PSALM 121:1 (ESV) says, "I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come?" The answer is not vague comfort. PSALM 121:2 (ESV) says, "My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth."

The psalm lifts the eyes above the immediate landscape to the Creator Himself.

That is important because trouble can narrow our vision. When pressure rises, the mind can become fixed on the problem, the person, the deadline, the lack, or the uncertainty. We look down, around, and inward, but forget to look to the Lord.

Psalm 121 does not tell us to ignore real needs. It teaches us where help ultimately comes from.

The Lord who helps is the Maker of heaven and earth. That means His help is not small. He is not limited by what limits us. He is not tired by what exhausts us. He is not confused by what overwhelms us.

The rest of the psalm speaks of the Lord keeping His people. He does not slumber. He is shade. He keeps from evil. He keeps the going out and coming in. This is not the picture of a distracted God.

PSALM 121:4 (ESV) says, "he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep." That truth is deeply comforting for anxious hearts. You are allowed to sleep because God does not. You are allowed to stop pretending you can keep everything together because the Keeper of His people is awake.

This does not mean nothing hard will ever happen. The Bible itself shows faithful people facing suffering. But the keeping care of God is deeper than the absence of difficulty. He keeps faith. He keeps His promises. He keeps His people for Himself.

1 PETER 1:5 (ESV) says believers are "being guarded through faith" by God's power. The Lord's keeping reaches all the way to salvation's final fulfillment.

If your eyes have been fixed only on the hills, lift them higher. Help is not finally in the strength of the hills, the wisdom of people, the security of money, or your ability to predict the future.

Your help comes from the Lord.

The Maker of heaven and earth is not too small for today's need.

Look to Him.
