Kept From Stumbling

The month ends with a truth every believer needs: God is able to keep His people.

JUDE 24 (ESV) says, "Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling." This is not confidence in human strength. It is praise directed to God. The keeping power belongs to Him.

That is deeply humbling.

We are weaker than we like to admit. The flesh is real. Temptation is real. Pride is real. Weariness is real. Drift can happen quietly. No believer should speak as though they are beyond the need for God's preserving grace.

But Jude does not leave us staring at our weakness. He lifts our eyes to the One who is able.

God is able to keep. Able to guard. Able to sustain faith. Able to complete what He has begun. Able to present His people blameless before the presence of His glory with great joy.

That phrase "with great joy" is stunning. The end of salvation is not reluctant acceptance. In Christ, God brings His people into glory according to His mercy and power.

This does not make watchfulness unnecessary. Earlier in Jude, believers are told to build themselves up in the most holy faith, pray in the Holy Spirit, and keep themselves in the love of God. God's keeping does not produce spiritual laziness. It produces dependent perseverance.

1 THESSALONIANS 5:23-24 (ESV) says that the God of peace will sanctify His people completely and adds, "He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it." The believer's hope rests on the faithfulness of the God who calls.

There is great comfort here for those who fear they will not make it. Your confidence is not meant to rest in your ability to hold God tightly enough. It rests in the God who holds His own.

Still, do not treat His grace lightly. Run from sin. Stay in the Word. Walk humbly. Receive correction. Remain in fellowship. Pray. Keep looking to Christ. These are not ways of earning God's keeping; they are means through which dependent believers keep walking with Him.

The final word is doxology.

JUDE 25 (ESV) gives glory, majesty, dominion, and authority to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord. That is where kept people end: worship.

You are not strong enough to be your own keeper.

But God is able.

And His ability is worthy of praise.
