Prepare the Way

God often prepares before people perceive. By the time Malachi speaks, God's people have already known promise, correction, exile, return, rebuilding, and disappointment. They knew what it was to wait. They knew what it was to wonder when fulfilment would come. Yet into that waiting, the Lord says in MALACHI 3:1 (ESV), "Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me." That matters because God's silence is never the same as God's absence. Between the final prophetic voices of the Old Testament and the events surrounding the birth of Christ, generations passed. People lived, prayed, sinned, repented, waited, hoped, and died. But heaven had not forgotten the promise. The Lord was preparing the way.

The New Testament shows John the Baptist fulfilling this messenger role as he calls people to repentance and points beyond himself to Christ. John did not come to build attention around his own name. He came to prepare the way of the Lord. Preparation often begins with repentance. That is not always what we expect. We may want God to prepare our circumstances while leaving our hearts untouched. But Scripture shows the Lord preparing a people, not merely arranging a moment. He confronts pride, exposes false worship, humbles self-reliance, and clears room for the King.

LUKE 3:4 (ESV) speaks of "the voice of one crying in the wilderness." The wilderness is not a place of polish or performance. It is a place where distractions are stripped back and the heart hears the call clearly: prepare the way of the Lord. As December begins, do not rush past preparation. The heart can enter a holy season distracted, hurried, hardened, or spiritually sleepy. We can sing about the coming of Christ while resisting the surrender His lordship requires. Ask the Lord to prepare the way in you. Not with decoration only. Not with sentiment only. With truth. With repentance. With renewed hunger. With a heart ready to receive Christ as He is, not merely as we prefer to imagine Him. God prepares before people perceive. And when He prepares the way, He is leading us toward the glory of His Son.
