Let It Be to Me

Surrender is easy to admire from a distance. It is harder when God's Word interrupts our plans. Mary's response in LUKE 1:38 (ESV) is one of humble faith: "Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." She does not understand every detail. She asks a real question earlier in the passage. But when the angel gives the word of the Lord, she yields. This is not passive weakness. It is active surrender. Mary places herself under God's Word. That is what faith does. It does not demand that God explain every consequence before obedience begins. It trusts the character of the One who speaks.

There would be cost. Mary's surrender did not happen in a private bubble where no one else would misunderstand. Her obedience would affect her reputation, her future, her relationships, and the way people looked at her. Yet she calls herself the servant of the Lord. That is where surrender begins: identity. If I belong to myself, obedience feels like intrusion. If I belong to the Lord, obedience becomes worship. The question is no longer, "Will this fit neatly into my plans?" The question becomes, "What has the Lord spoken?"

PROVERBS 16:9 (ESV) says, "The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps." Planning is not wrong, but plans must bow before God. The Lord has authority to redirect what we thought was settled. Mary's words are simple, but they expose us. There are places where we want God's blessing without His interruption. We want His comfort without His lordship. We want His promises while keeping control. But servants do not negotiate with the Master's Word as though obedience is optional. This does not mean every hard thing is automatically a command from God. We test all things by Scripture. God will never lead us into sin. But when His Word is clear, surrender is not waiting for feelings to catch up. Let it be to me according to Your Word. That is not small faith. It is the posture of a life yielded to the Lord.
