He Shared in Flesh and Blood

The incarnation is not a distant idea for theologians only. It is the mercy of God coming close enough to save. HEBREWS 2:14 (ESV) says that because the children share in flesh and blood, Christ Himself likewise partook of the same things. The Son of God truly entered human life. He did not appear as a shadow. He did not pretend to be human. He took on flesh and blood. But the verse also tells us why: "that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death." Christ came to die and conquer.

The manger cannot be separated from the cross. The Son took on human nature so He could offer Himself in death for His people. He entered the realm where death had terrified humanity, and through His death and resurrection He broke its power. That gives Christmas holy weight. The baby born in humility is the Redeemer who came to deal with the deepest enemy. He came for people enslaved by fear of death. He came for sinners who could not defeat sin, death, or the devil by their own strength. This is why sentiment is too small for Christmas. Warm feelings may come and go. Family moments may be sweet or painful. Traditions may comfort or disappoint. But the truth remains: Christ shared in flesh and blood to deliver His people.

1 JOHN 3:8 (ESV) says, "The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil." Jesus did not come as a helpless symbol. He came as Savior and Victor. If death has frightened you, if weakness has humbled you, if sin has shown you your need, look to Christ. He did not stand far away from human frailty. He entered it without sin, and He triumphed through the path of obedience, suffering, death, and resurrection. He shared in flesh and blood. Not because He was overcome. Because He came to overcome for us.
