The True Light

Not every light is true light. The world offers many forms of brightness. Attention. Success. Pleasure. Knowledge. Comfort. Image. Escape. Some of these may look attractive for a time, but none can give the light the soul most deeply needs. JOHN 1:9 (ESV) says, "The true light... was coming into the world." John is speaking of Christ. Jesus is not one helpful lamp among many. He is the true light. That means He reveals what is real. Light exposes. That can feel uncomfortable. When Christ shines, sin cannot remain safely hidden. Motives are revealed. False hopes are exposed. Darkness is named for what it is. But the light of Christ is not cruel. He exposes in order to save, cleanse, lead, and give life. People often want comfort without exposure. We want enough light to feel encouraged, but not enough light to reveal what must change. Yet Christ does not come to flatter darkness. He comes as light.

JOHN 8:12 (ESV) records Jesus saying, "I am the light of the world." He then says whoever follows Him will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. Following matters. The light is not meant to be admired from a distance while we keep choosing darkness. This is a needed December word. It is possible to enjoy lights everywhere while resisting the true Light. Streets can glow, homes can shine, candles can burn, and still the heart can remain dark if Christ is refused. Do not settle for decorative light when your soul needs living light. Bring the hidden places to Him. Let His Word reveal. Let His truth correct. Let His grace cleanse. Let His presence lead. Christ is not a temporary glow for a season. He is the true light coming into the world.
