The Light Has Come: Part 1

Darkness is not small in Scripture. It speaks of ignorance, sorrow, oppression, sin, judgment, confusion, and the deep need of humanity apart from God. Isaiah does not describe people who merely need a little encouragement. He speaks of people walking in darkness. Then comes the promise in ISAIAH 9:2 (ESV): "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light." This is hope that comes from God. The people do not produce the light from within themselves. They do not climb out of darkness by human brilliance. Light dawns because the Lord acts. The promise points forward to the coming of Christ, the true light who enters the world. That matters because people often underestimate darkness. We call it weakness, confusion, personal preference, or simply "how life is." But Scripture tells the truth. Apart from God, humanity is not merely dim. It is in darkness. And yet God gives light. This is not the light of denial. Christ does not pretend sin is harmless or suffering is imaginary. He shines into the truth of things. He exposes what destroys and reveals the mercy of God.

MATTHEW 4:16 (ESV) applies Isaiah's words to the ministry of Jesus: "the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light." The promise begins to shine visibly in Christ. If you feel darkness pressing, do not make peace with it. Bring it to the Lord. Darkness in the mind. Darkness in old habits. Darkness in fear. Darkness in unbelief. Darkness in grief. Christ is not threatened by what He came to overcome. The light has come. Not because the world deserved it. Because God is merciful. That makes this promise deeply personal without making it self-centred. The darkness Isaiah describes is not only out there in the world; apart from grace, it is the condition of every human heart. We need more than inspiration. We need illumination, forgiveness, and new life. EPHESIANS 5:8 (ESV) says, "for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord." Christ does not merely shine near His people; He changes what they are. The light that dawns calls us to walk as children of light.
