Teach Me to Do Your Will

It is possible to want guidance without wanting obedience. We ask God what to do, but sometimes what we really want is information that keeps us in control. David's prayer in PSALM 143:10 (ESV) is deeper: "Teach me to do your will, for you are my God." He is not asking merely to know God's will. He is asking to do it. That distinction matters. Many people know more truth than they obey. We can hear sermons, read verses, make plans, and still resist the actual surrender God is calling for. The issue is not always lack of information. Sometimes it is lack of yieldedness.

David grounds the prayer in relationship: "for you are my God." Obedience flows from belonging. If the Lord is my God, His will is not an interruption to my true good. His will is the path of faithfulness. The verse continues, "Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground." We need the Lord's help to obey the Lord's will. Christian obedience is not self-powered moral effort. It is dependent walking by the help of God.

2 PETER 1:3 (ESV) says God's divine power has granted to us "all things that pertain to life and godliness." God does not merely command from a distance. He gives what His people need to walk in obedience. As a new year approaches, this prayer is better than empty ambition. Teach me to do Your will. Not just dream bigger. Not just become busier. Not just chase improvement. Teach me to obey You. Ask the Lord to make His will plain where Scripture speaks clearly, and to give wisdom where decisions require discernment. Ask Him to expose stubbornness disguised as confusion. He is God. And His will is not a burden to escape, but a path to walk with Him. That does not mean obedience will always feel easy. Sometimes doing God's will will cut across pride, comfort, fear, and personal preference. But the will of God is never detached from the goodness of God. JOHN 7:17 (ESV) says, "If anyone's will is to do God's will, he will know whether the teaching is from God." The surrendered heart learns to trust that God's commands are not trying to rob us of life. They are leading us in the way of life.
