Guarded Until That Day

The final day of the year can stir many emotions. Gratitude. Regret. Relief. Weariness. Hope. Questions. Some years close with celebration. Others close with scars. Some people reach the end feeling strong; others arrive quietly, aware that God carried them more than they carried themselves. Paul's confidence in 2 TIMOTHY 1:12 (ESV) is not in himself. He says, "I know whom I have believed." In the surrounding verses, Paul is speaking about the gospel entrusted to him and the good deposit Timothy must guard by the Holy Spirit. His confidence is that the Lord is able to guard what has been entrusted until that day. That is a strong way to end a year: not with confidence in our own strength, but in the Lord and in the truth of His gospel.

The Christian life rests on a Person, not on our ability to predict the future. Paul suffered for the gospel, served Christ, and called Timothy to guard the good deposit through the Holy Spirit. God's power did not make obedience unimportant; it made faithful obedience possible. Paul's deepest confidence rested in the Lord he knew, not in human strength. The gospel was not his invention to reshape or his possession to protect by cleverness. It was a sacred trust to proclaim faithfully, confident that God's truth and saving purpose would not fail.

1 PETER 4:19 (ESV) says those who suffer according to God's will should entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good. Entrusting is not passivity. It is faithful obedience grounded in God's character. JUDE 24 (ESV) says God is able to keep believers from stumbling and to present them blameless before His glory with great joy. As this year ends, entrust yourself to the Lord and remain faithful to the gospel. Bring Him the answered prayers and the unanswered ones, the joy and the grief, the growth and the failure, the known and the unknown. Christ is Lord of beginnings and endings. You may not know what the next year holds, but you can know whom you have believed. The Lord has not promised His people a future without testing, but He has promised to be faithful. HEBREWS 10:35-36 (ESV) therefore tells believers not to throw away their confidence and speaks of the need for endurance. End the year honestly, but not hopelessly: guard the truth entrusted to you, obey through the Spirit's strength, and trust the God who is able to keep His people.
