First Things First: Part 3

God does not only call His people to be busy. He calls them to be set apart. In 2 TIMOTHY 2:21 (ESV), Paul speaks of a vessel cleansed from what is dishonourable, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work. The picture is practical and searching. Usefulness before God is not disconnected from cleansing.

Many people want purpose without purity. They want to be used by God while keeping compromise protected. They want spiritual fruit without surrender in the hidden life. But Scripture does not treat the vessel as irrelevant. The Lord cares about the condition of the servant, not only the activity of the servant.

This is not salvation by performance. We are saved by grace, not by making ourselves impressive. But grace trains us to renounce what dishonours God. If something is making the heart dull, feeding sin, hardening the conscience, or pulling affection away from Christ, it cannot be treated as harmless. A vessel prepared for the Master's use must be yielded to the Master's cleansing.

2 TIMOTHY 2:22 (ESV) continues by saying, "So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace." There is both fleeing and pursuing. We do not only step away from sin; we move toward what pleases the Lord.

First things first: ask God where cleansing is needed. Not for shame. For readiness. The Master is worthy of a surrendered vessel. The year ahead does not need a more polished version of self-rule. It needs a heart set apart for Him.

Being ready for the Master's use also means becoming less attached to our own idea of usefulness. Sometimes God prepares a person through hidden obedience before visible fruit appears. Sometimes cleansing comes before calling feels clearer. Sometimes the Lord deals with attitudes, habits, and motives we would rather ignore because He loves us too much to use us while leaving those places untouched. A set-apart life is not wasted while God is preparing it.
