Pay Much Closer Attention
HEBREWS 2:1 (ESV)
"Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it."
Drift rarely feels dramatic while it is happening. It is often slow, quiet, and easily explained away. A little less attention to Scripture. A little more tolerance for sin. A little more distance from prayer. A little more confidence in our own thinking. Before long, the heart that once felt awake becomes dull.
HEBREWS 2:1 (ESV) gives a strong warning: "we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it." The answer to drift is attention. Not casual attention. Much closer attention. The gospel, the Word of God, and the truth about Christ must not be treated as familiar background noise.
Drift is dangerous because it does not always announce itself as rebellion. Sometimes it appears as busyness. Sometimes as tiredness. Sometimes as harmless distraction. Sometimes as "I will get back to that soon." But the soul cannot remain healthy while neglecting the Word that gives life.
This verse is not calling us to panic. It is calling us to wakefulness. HEBREWS 3:12 (ESV) warns against an evil, unbelieving heart that leads one to fall away from the living God. The heart must be watched. What we hear from God must be held with reverence.
If you have been drifting, do not decorate it. Name it and return. Pay attention again. Open Scripture again. Come under truth again. The mercy of God is not permission to stay careless; it is the invitation to come back before drift becomes distance.
This warning is especially needed when life feels normal. Crisis often wakes people up, but comfort can lull the soul to sleep. We may think we are safe because nothing dramatic is wrong, while attention to God has quietly thinned. Paying closer attention means refusing spiritual autopilot. It means asking whether Scripture is still correcting us, whether worship is still sincere, and whether Christ is still the centre rather than a familiar name at the edges of life.
