Return to First Love

It is possible to be active for Christ while growing cold toward Christ. That is one of the searching warnings in REVELATION 2:4-5 (ESV). The church in Ephesus had works, toil, endurance, and doctrinal discernment, yet Jesus says, "you have abandoned the love you had at first."

That should make every believer pause. Activity is not always affection. Correctness is not always closeness. Endurance can continue outwardly while love cools inwardly. A person can serve, speak, post, attend, defend truth, and still need to return to first love.

Jesus does not treat this as a small issue. He calls them to remember, repent, and do the works they did at first. Love for Christ is not sentimental decoration on top of discipleship. It is central. When love cools, obedience becomes mechanical, truth becomes harsh, service becomes performance, and worship becomes routine.

The call to remember is mercy. Remember what Christ saved you from. Remember the joy of belonging to Him. Remember the wonder of forgiveness. Remember when His Word felt like bread and His presence mattered more than being seen. 1 JOHN 4:19 (ESV) says, "We love because he first loved us." First love is renewed by returning to the love of Christ first shown to us.

If your heart has become busy but cold, do not settle there. Return to Him. Not merely to better habits, but to Christ Himself. He is worthy of more than labour without love.

This is why a cold heart should not be excused as maturity. Sometimes people call it balance when it is really distance. They call it experience when it is really lost tenderness. The Lord is not asking for shallow emotion, but He does call for love. If service has become duty without affection, if truth has become argument without worship, or if obedience has become routine without delight in Christ, His call is mercy: remember, repent, return.
