Keep the Fire Burning

Leviticus must be handled carefully. We do not lift Old Testament altar commands out of context as though believers are still under the sacrificial system. Christ has fulfilled what the sacrifices pointed toward. Yet LEVITICUS 6:12-13 (ESV) still teaches us something serious about the holy worship of God: the fire on the altar was not to go out.

The command speaks of continual attention. The priest was not to treat the altar carelessly. Worship involved reverence, order, and obedience before the Lord. In the light of Christ, we do not keep an altar fire to offer sacrifices for sin, because Jesus offered Himself once for all. But we are still called to lives of continual devotion.

Many hearts grow cold not through one dramatic decision, but through neglect. The Word is neglected. Prayer is neglected. Fellowship is neglected. Repentance is delayed. Small compromises become normal. The fire of devotion is not protected, and slowly the heart loses warmth toward God.

ROMANS 12:11 (ESV) says, "Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord." Fervency is not emotional hype. It is a heart kept alive before God through grace, truth, repentance, and obedience.

Ask honestly: what has been allowed to cool? Where have you become careless with holy things? The answer is not self-powered intensity. It is returning to the Lord with reverence and asking Him to renew steady devotion. Keep the fire burning, not as ritual performance, but as a life kept near to God.

A steady fire is usually protected through ordinary faithfulness. It is not kept alive by occasional bursts of emotion, but by repeated returning to God. The Word opened again. Sin confessed again. Worship chosen again. The heart brought near again. This is not lifeless routine when it is done before the Lord. Ordinary means can carry holy fire when they are received with faith, reverence, and dependence on the Spirit of God.
