The Word on Your Mouth

Joshua was stepping into a serious calling. Moses had died, the people were before the land, and leadership would require courage. Yet the Lord does not first give Joshua a strategy built on human confidence. He commands him to hold fast to the Word.

JOSHUA 1:8 (ESV) says the Book of the Law shall not depart from his mouth, but he shall meditate on it day and night, so that he may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. Meditation is tied to obedience. The goal is not merely knowing words, but walking in them.

This is important because courage without Scripture can become presumption. A person can feel bold and still be disobedient. They can move quickly and still move wrongly. Joshua needed courage, but courage had to be governed by the Word of God.

The verse says the Word should be on his mouth. That means God's truth was not to remain hidden away from daily life. It was to be spoken, remembered, considered, and obeyed. What fills the mouth often reveals what fills the heart.

DEUTERONOMY 30:14 (ESV) says, "the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it." God gives His Word not for decoration, but for obedience.

Let the Word shape what you repeat, what you rehearse, and what you rely on. When pressure rises, do not let fear have the loudest voice. Put the Word on your mouth and under your feet.

Meditation is different from empty repetition. It is thoughtful attention to what God has said. It asks, What does this reveal about the Lord? What does it expose in me? What obedience does it call for? What promise must I trust? This kind of meditation gives courage because the heart is no longer feeding only on fear, pressure, or human opinion. It is being strengthened by truth that does not change when circumstances do.
