Grow in Christ

Growth in the Christian life is not growth away from dependence. 2 PETER 3:18 (ESV) says, "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." The believer grows by going deeper into Christ, not by moving beyond Him.

That matters because spiritual maturity can be misunderstood. Some think maturity means becoming less needy. Others think it means knowing more facts while the heart remains proud. But Scripture ties growth to grace and knowledge of Christ. True growth makes a person more humble, more dependent, more obedient, and more aware of the mercy of God.

Grace must not make us careless, and knowledge must not make us proud. Grace teaches us to say no to sin. Knowledge teaches us who God is and how we are to live before Him. Together, they form a life that increasingly belongs to Christ in practice, not only in confession.

PHILIPPIANS 1:9 (ESV) says, "that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment." Love, knowledge, and discernment belong together. Growth should make us warmer in love and clearer in truth.

Do not measure growth only by how much you can explain. Ask whether Christ is being formed in your reactions, choices, speech, patience, repentance, and love. Grow in Him. The goal is not spiritual appearance. The goal is deeper life in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Growth also requires time. No healthy life matures instantly. The Lord often forms His people through repeated obedience, correction, endurance, and returning. There may be areas where growth feels slow, but slow growth is not the same as no growth. Keep coming to Christ. Keep receiving grace. Keep learning His Word. Keep repenting when He shows what is wrong. Spiritual growth is not a performance to display; it is fruit the Lord forms in a surrendered life.
