Make It Your Aim

A life needs a central aim. Without one, we are easily pulled by mood, pressure, approval, fear, comfort, and comparison. Paul gives a clear aim in 2 CORINTHIANS 5:9 (ESV): "we make it our aim to please him."

That sentence reaches ordinary life. Pleasing the Lord is not only for church gatherings, ministry roles, or dramatic decisions. It reaches work, rest, family, money, speech, entertainment, motives, and private choices. The believer's life is lived before Christ.

This aim also simplifies many decisions. The question is not only, "Can I do this?" or "Will people approve?" or "Does this benefit me?" The deeper question is, "Does this please the Lord?" That question cuts through much confusion. It exposes hidden motives and brings the heart back under Christ's authority.

The question of approval is unavoidable. We cannot serve two masters of approval. If pleasing people becomes lord, obedience will bend. If pleasing self becomes lord, holiness will shrink. But if pleasing Christ becomes the aim, the life begins to steady.

Make it your aim. Not perfectly in your own strength, but sincerely by grace. Bring each day under that holy question: Lord, what pleases You here?

This aim also reaches suffering and disappointment. Pleasing the Lord is not only for days when life feels successful. Sometimes pleasing Him means staying faithful when no one understands, forgiving when pride wants to harden, telling the truth when lying would be easier, or doing hidden work with a clean heart. A life aimed at Christ does not need every moment to feel impressive. It needs every moment brought under His lordship.

That kind of aim will reshape what you say yes to and what you quietly refuse. It will make some decisions clearer, some sacrifices sweeter, and some old ambitions look smaller. The great question becomes simple: is Christ honoured here?
