Words Before God

PSALM 19:14 (ESV)

"Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight."

David's prayer in PSALM 19:14 (ESV) reaches both mouth and heart. He asks that his words and inward meditation would be acceptable before the Lord. That is important because speech does not begin at the lips. Words often reveal what has been living within.

Many people try to control speech without bringing the heart before God. They may hold back certain words in public while still feeding bitterness, pride, lust, envy, or contempt within. But David prays deeper. He brings the hidden meditation and the spoken word under the gaze of God.

The phrase "in your sight" matters. We speak before God, not merely before people. Even when no one else hears, the Lord knows the heart. That does not produce despair for the believer; it produces reverence and honesty.

Jesus teaches that words reveal what is filling the heart. If our words are repeatedly harsh, careless, proud, deceitful, or impure, we should not only manage the tongue. We should bring the heart to God.

Let this become a daily prayer. Lord, let what I say and what I dwell on within be pleasing to You. The mouth and the meditation both belong before Him.

This prayer can become especially powerful before difficult conversations. Before replying, correcting, defending yourself, or speaking under emotion, bring both mouth and heart before the Lord. Ask not only, Is this true? but also, Is this acceptable in Your sight? Is the meditation beneath it clean? Words offered before God become slower, wiser, and less ruled by the need to win. The Lord cares about the sentence and the spirit behind it.

There is hope here too. God can change not only what comes out of the mouth, but what is stored in the heart. The same Lord who hears our words can purify the place where they begin.
