Words That Heal or Wound
PROVERBS 12:18 (ESV)
"There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing."
Words can cut deeper than we admit. PROVERBS 12:18 (ESV) says rash words are like sword thrusts, while the tongue of the wise brings healing. Scripture refuses to treat speech as small.
Rash words often come quickly. They rise from irritation, pride, defensiveness, exhaustion, or the desire to win a moment. But quick words can leave slow wounds. A sentence spoken carelessly may be remembered long after the speaker has moved on.
Wisdom does not mean never saying hard things. Sometimes truth must be spoken clearly. But wise speech is not reckless. It is governed by the fear of the Lord and love for the person. It seeks healing where possible, not damage for the sake of relief.
PROVERBS 15:4 (ESV) says, "A gentle tongue is a tree of life." Gentleness is not weakness. It is strength under God's control. A gentle tongue can bring life into a room that anger would have poisoned.
Before you speak, ask what your words are carrying. Are they truth, healing, patience, and grace? Or are they frustration sharpened into a weapon? The tongue can wound, but under the Lord's wisdom it can also become an instrument of healing.
Healing words do not always feel dramatic. They may be patient words, honest words, gentle correction, timely encouragement, or a quiet refusal to answer harshness with harshness. Wisdom asks what love requires, not merely what emotion wants to release. If your words have wounded, humility may require confession and repair. If your words can heal, do not withhold them out of laziness or pride. The tongue belongs under the lordship of God.
This matters in homes, workplaces, messages, church conversations, and hidden comments made when someone is absent. The Lord is not only concerned with public speech. He calls the whole tongue into wisdom, so our words become servants of truth and mercy.
