Speak Truth to One Another

Truthfulness is part of life before God. In ZECHARIAH 8:16 (ESV), the Lord says, "Speak the truth to one another." This command is not merely about avoiding obvious lies. It calls God's people to a way of life shaped by truth.

Falsehood can take many forms. It can be exaggeration, flattery, hiding what should be confessed, twisting a story to protect our image, speaking half-truths, or avoiding honest words because truth may cost us. But the people of God are not called to manage appearances. They are called to walk in truth.

The verse also connects truth with peace. That matters. Some people use "truth" as an excuse for harshness. Others pursue "peace" by avoiding truth. Scripture holds them together. True peace cannot be built on deception, and truthful speech should not be driven by cruelty.

EPHESIANS 4:25 (ESV) says to put away falsehood and speak the truth with one's neighbour because we are members one of another. Truthfulness protects the body of Christ. Lies fracture trust; truth helps build what is healthy.

Ask the Lord to make your words honest and clean. Not performative honesty that wounds for attention, but truthful speech that belongs to a life under God. Speak truth to one another, and let peace be shaped by what is true.

Truthful speech also requires courage. It can be easier to avoid, flatter, or stay vague, especially when honesty may make a conversation uncomfortable. But love does not build relationships on deception. At the same time, truth does not need to be delivered with a hard heart. The Lord calls His people to speech that is clean, honest, peace-seeking, and submitted to Him. Truth spoken rightly can become a means of healing rather than a weapon of pride.
