Put to Death What Is Earthly

A mind set on Christ must lead to a life that kills sin. COLOSSIANS 3:5 (ESV) says, "Put to death therefore what is earthly in you." Paul does not say manage it, decorate it, excuse it, or keep it hidden. He says put it to death.

The passage names sins plainly: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, covetousness, anger, wrath, malice, slander, obscene talk, and lying. Scripture is specific because sin is deceitful. General conviction can be easy to avoid; named sin must be faced.

Putting sin to death is not self-salvation. Only Christ saves. But saved people are called to wage war against what belongs to the old self. Grace does not make sin safe. Grace gives power and reason to turn from it.

COLOSSIANS 3:10 (ESV) speaks of the new self being renewed after the image of its Creator. God is not merely improving behaviour on the surface. He is renewing His people deeply.

Do not make peace with what Christ commands you to put to death. Bring sin into the light. Cut off what feeds it. Replace lies with truth. Walk as one who belongs to Christ and is being renewed by Him.

Putting sin to death also means being practical. Some sins are kept alive because we keep feeding them. We stay near the same triggers, entertain the same thoughts, excuse the same patterns, and then wonder why the battle feels unchanged. Grace teaches us to fight honestly. Delete what needs deleting. Leave what needs leaving. Confess what needs confessing. Replace what is earthly with what belongs to Christ.

This is not harshness without hope. The same passage speaks of the new self being renewed. God does not call His people only away from sin; He calls them into life that is being made more like Christ.
