Taste and See

The goodness of God is not meant to remain only a sentence we repeat. PSALM 34:8 (ESV) says, "Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good!" David invites trust that is personal, lived, and tested.

This does not mean God's goodness is measured by life always feeling pleasant. Psalm 34 was not written from a painless life. David knew fear, danger, and need. Yet he could still say the Lord is good. God's goodness is not cancelled by trouble.

To taste and see is to come to the Lord, trust Him, and discover that He is faithful. It means we do not only discuss His goodness from a distance. We take refuge in Him. We obey His Word. We bring our need before Him. We find that His character is better than our fears suggested.

NAHUM 1:7 (ESV) says, "The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble." His goodness is not fragile. It is strong enough for trouble.

If your view of God has been shaped more by pain than by Scripture, come back to what He has revealed. Taste and see. Take refuge in Him. The Lord is good, not because every circumstance is easy, but because He is faithful, merciful, holy, and near to those who seek Him.

Taste and see also means the invitation is not cold theory. The Lord calls weary, needy, fearful people to find refuge in Him. Some people know many statements about God's goodness but have rarely brought their real need to Him in trust. Come with the need you actually have. Come with the fear, the weakness, the grief, the question. His goodness is not fragile, and His care is not only for easier days.

The invitation is gracious because it is personal. God does not ask His people to pretend life is easy before they come. He invites them to discover His goodness in the middle of real need, real weakness, and real dependence.
