Kindness That Leads Us Home

God's kindness is not weakness. It is not permission to stay unchanged. ROMANS 2:4 (ESV) says that "God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance." That means grace is not God ignoring sin; grace is God drawing sinners home instead of leaving them where rebellion would destroy them.

Sometimes people mistake patience for approval. Because judgement has not fallen, they assume the Lord is not concerned. But Paul warns against that. The riches of God's kindness, forbearance, and patience are not given so the heart can become harder. They are given so the heart can turn.

This is both confronting and beautiful. It confronts us because we cannot use God's mercy as an excuse for compromise. If the Lord has been patient, that patience is calling us somewhere. It is calling us out of hidden sin, out of pride, out of delay, out of the dangerous comfort of saying, "later."

But it is beautiful because repentance begins under the kindness of God. He is not cruelly waiting for us to fail. He is mercifully calling us to return. PSALM 25:6-7 (ESV) asks God to remember His mercy and steadfast love, and not the sins of youth. That is the cry of someone who knows sin is real, but mercy is greater.

Do not despise the kindness of God by delaying obedience. Let His goodness soften what sin has hardened. The same Lord who exposes sin is the Lord who receives repentant sinners. His kindness is leading you home.

There is a holy urgency in this. The longer we resist kindness, the easier it becomes to call hardness normal. But every fresh mercy, every spared day, every conviction that still reaches the heart, is evidence that God has not left us alone. Let His kindness do its intended work. Do not only feel sorry; come back. Do not only admire grace; surrender to it. The kindness of God is strong enough to bring a wandering heart home, and loving enough to call that heart before it is ruined by delay.
