He Delights in Steadfast Love

There are truths about God that the weary heart must hear again. MICAH 7:18 (ESV) says, "He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in steadfast love." The Lord does not merely show mercy reluctantly. He delights in steadfast love.

That does not make sin small. Micah speaks honestly about iniquity, transgression, and the need for pardon. Grace becomes shallow when sin is treated lightly. But Scripture does not present God as barely willing to forgive. It reveals a God whose mercy is deep, faithful, and covenant-true.

The next verse says He will have compassion and will cast sins into the depths of the sea. That image is meant to strengthen faith. God is not like people who forgive with their mouth while keeping the offence close enough to use later. When He pardons, He does not play games with grace.

EXODUS 34:6 (ESV) reveals the Lord as "merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness." This has always been His character. He is holy, and He is merciful. He judges sin, and He receives the repentant.

If you have been carrying sin as though God's mercy is too thin to cover it, look again at who He says He is. Do not cling to guilt as if it is more powerful than His compassion. Turn to Him honestly. He delights in steadfast love.

That truth should not make us casual; it should make us worship. A God who delights in steadfast love is worthy of full surrender. Mercy is not a hiding place for rebellion, but the place where rebellion is finally laid down. Let His compassion move you away from sin, not deeper into it. The heart that has been forgiven much should not want to return to the chains Christ broke. He delights in steadfast love, and that love is holy.
