As Far as East from West

God's forgiveness is not small. PSALM 103:10-12 (ESV) says He does not deal with us according to our sins, and "as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us." That is not sentimental language. It is covenant mercy.

The enemy loves to keep sin close even after confession. He reminds, accuses, replays, and whispers that forgiveness cannot be that complete. But David blesses the Lord because God's mercy is greater than our record. The forgiven person is not pretending sin never happened. The forgiven person is trusting what God has done with it.

This should humble us deeply. If God dealt with us according to our sins, none of us could stand. We are not forgiven because we explained sin well enough or punished ourselves long enough. We are forgiven because the Lord is merciful, and for believers that mercy is secured in Christ.

ISAIAH 43:25 (ESV) says, "I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake." Forgiveness rests on God's character and saving work, not our ability to feel forgiven strongly enough.

So confess sin honestly, but do not keep dragging back what God has removed. Let mercy lead to worship, holiness, and freedom. East and west do not meet. The Lord knows how to forgive completely.

This is where faith must answer feelings. You may still remember what God has forgiven, and consequences may still need to be walked through with humility. But remembrance is not the same as condemnation. The Lord's mercy teaches us to own sin without being owned by it. If He has removed your transgressions, do not build your identity around what He has placed far from you. Walk in repentance, but also walk in the freedom His Word declares.
