He Does Not Afflict from His Heart

Some seasons feel heavy enough to make the heart question God's tenderness. LAMENTATIONS 3:31-33 (ESV) does not deny grief. It says, "though he cause grief, he will have compassion according to the abundance of his steadfast love."

That sentence matters because the Bible is honest about sorrow without making God cruel. The Lord may discipline, refine, correct, or allow painful seasons, but He does not delight in crushing His people. The passage says He does not afflict from His heart or grieve the children of men. His compassion remains abundant even when the season is hard.

This helps us reject two lies. The first lie says pain means God has stopped loving us. The second says God's love means life should never hurt. Scripture gives a deeper truth: God can be loving in the middle of grief, and His compassion is not cancelled by what we do not understand.

DEUTERONOMY 32:4 (ESV) says, "all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he." We may not always understand His ways, but His character is never crooked.

If you are in a heavy place, do not interpret God's heart only through the pain. Let His Word speak louder. He may correct, refine, and lead through tears, but His steadfast love is abundant. He will have compassion.

The hardest seasons can tempt us to form conclusions too quickly. We see the grief and assume we have seen the whole story. But Scripture tells us the Lord's compassion is larger than the chapter we are standing in. Wait with faith, even if faith is trembling. Lament honestly, but do not accuse God falsely. His hands may be dealing with deep things, yet His heart is not against His people. The God who allows grief also promises compassion.
