Lowly Enough to Be Lifted

God is high and holy, yet He draws near to the lowly. ISAIAH 57:15 (ESV) says the One who inhabits eternity dwells "with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly."

That is astonishing. The holy God is not impressed by pride, performance, or religious self-confidence. He comes near to the contrite. He revives the lowly. The heart that stops pretending and bows before Him is not pushed away.

Pride keeps people at a distance from grace. It makes excuses, compares, blames, performs, and tries to remain in control. Lowly repentance does something different. It tells the truth. It stops defending sin. It comes empty-handed. And God does not despise that.

PSALM 34:18 (ESV) says, "The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." Nearness is not promised to the proud who insist they are fine. It is promised to the broken who know they need Him.

There is no need to dress up your need before God. Come low. Come honest. Come contrite. The Lord does not crush the lowly spirit; He revives it. Grace meets us in the place where pride finally bows and the heart becomes teachable again.

This is why humility is not defeat. It may feel like losing control, but it is really coming into the only posture where grace can be received. A proud heart argues with the doctor while the wound worsens. A lowly heart lets the Lord touch what hurts, correct what is crooked, and breathe life where strength has failed. Come low enough to be lifted. The Holy One revives the contrite.

There is great hope in this for the person tired of pretending. God does not ask for a polished mask. He asks for truth in the heart. The low place can become the place of revival when it brings us honestly before Him.
