A Bruised Reed He Will Not Break

Jesus is not careless with the weak. MATTHEW 12:20 (ESV) says, "A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not quench." That is a tender picture of His gentleness toward those who are fragile, wounded, or faint.

A bruised reed is already damaged. A smoldering wick is barely burning. Many people feel like that spiritually. They are not proud rebels shaking a fist at God; they are weary, ashamed, overwhelmed, and afraid their little strength is not enough.

Christ does not despise weakness. He does not handle bruised people roughly. He restores. He strengthens what is faint. He brings justice to victory, but He does so with a gentleness that reveals the heart of God.

This does not mean Jesus leaves us unchanged. His gentleness is not indulgence. He may confront sin, call for obedience, and expose what must be healed. But He does not crush those who come to Him in need.

ISAIAH 42:3 (ESV) gives the same promise: "a bruised reed he will not break." Matthew shows that this is fulfilled in Christ. So bring Him the bruised places. Bring the little flame. He is strong enough to restore without destroying, and gentle enough to heal what others might mishandle.

Do not confuse His gentleness with distance. The compassion of Christ comes near. He knows how to deal with fearful faith, wounded trust, and obedience that feels weak. But He also knows how to fan a smoldering wick back into flame. If all you can bring Him is bruised faith and a faint cry, bring that. He will not handle you with the cruelty of the enemy or the impatience of people. He is gentle and strong.
