Mercy, Not Sacrifice

Jesus was not ashamed to be near sinners who knew they needed Him. In MATTHEW 9:13 (ESV) He says, "I desire mercy, and not sacrifice. For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners."

The religious leaders questioned why Jesus ate with tax collectors and sinners. Their problem was not zeal for holiness; it was a failure to understand mercy. They could identify sin in others, but they could not see the mercy of God standing in front of them.

Jesus does not call sin righteousness. He calls sinners. That difference matters. Grace is not agreement with our brokenness. Grace is the Savior coming near enough to rescue us from it. The people who came to Him were not saved by pretending they were healthy. They came because they needed a physician.

HOSEA 6:6 (ESV) says, "For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings." Jesus uses that Scripture to expose religion without mercy. God is not pleased by outward forms that lack His heart.

Let this challenge both pride and despair. Pride must stop looking down on sinners as though mercy is only for other people. Despair must stop believing sinners cannot come. Jesus came to call sinners, and that is very good news.

This should reshape the way we see ministry, church, family, and our own hearts. Mercy does not mean lowering God's standard; it means bringing God's compassion to people who have fallen short of it. A merciless heart may know correct words and still miss the heart of Christ. The Savior came near to rescue, not to flatter. If we have received mercy, we must learn to carry mercy without losing truth.

And when we are the ones exposed as needy, we must not act surprised. Jesus came for sinners. That truth humbles every proud heart and gives courage to every ashamed one. Mercy is not outside His mission; it is at the centre of it.
