When the Father Ran

The prodigal son prepared a speech, but the father moved first. LUKE 15:20 (ESV) says, "his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him."

This is one of the most tender pictures Jesus gives of mercy toward the repentant. The son had sinned deeply. He had dishonoured his father, wasted what he was given, and come to the end of himself. The story does not excuse his rebellion. But when he returns, the father is not cold.

The father sees, feels compassion, runs, embraces, and restores. That does not make repentance unnecessary; it shows what mercy meets when repentance begins to turn home. The son expected to be treated like a hired servant, but the father restored him as a son.

LUKE 15:24 (ESV) says, "this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found." That is the joy of restoration. Grace does not merely tolerate a returning sinner. It rejoices over what was lost being found.

If you have wandered, do not let shame write the ending. Return to the Father. Do not come with excuses. Come honestly. But come expecting mercy richer than you deserve. The Father is not poor in compassion.

The son's return did not erase the reality of wasted years, but the father's welcome defined the restoration. That matters for every person who fears they have gone too far. Sin may have brought you low, but the Father's mercy is not embarrassed by a repentant child coming home. Do not remain in the far country because you cannot imagine being received. Jesus told this story so we would know the heart of the Father toward the returning.
