Do You Love Me?

Peter failed loudly, but Jesus restored him personally. In JOHN 21:17 (ESV), after Jesus asks again, Peter says, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you."

This scene is full of mercy, but it is not shallow. Jesus does not pretend Peter never denied Him. He brings the wound into the light. Three times Peter had denied; three times Jesus asks about love. Restoration is tender, but it is truthful.

That is how grace works. It does not simply say, "Forget it, it does not matter." It matters. Sin grieves the Lord and wounds the soul. But Jesus is able to restore failed disciples without crushing them. He calls Peter back into love and service: feed My sheep.

JOHN 21:19 (ESV) says, "And after saying this he said to him, 'Follow me.'" Failure did not cancel Peter's call when grace restored him. Jesus still says follow Me.

If you have failed, do not hide from the restoring questions of Christ. He may press deeper than comfort would choose, but He presses in order to heal. Let Him deal with the denial, the fear, the compromise, the shame. Grace restores us to love, and love follows Him again.

Peter's story is a mercy for every believer who has wept over failure. Jesus did not define Peter only by the worst night of his life. He restored him in truth and sent him forward in obedience. That does not make failure harmless. It makes Christ merciful. The Lord can rebuild love where fear once ruled. He can make a humbled disciple useful again. When Jesus says follow Me, grace is calling you onward.

Do not confuse restoration with avoiding the painful conversation. Jesus loved Peter enough to go there. Grace may bring questions we would rather avoid, but it does so to restore love, not to deepen shame.
