Beholding and Becoming

God's grace does not only forgive the past; it transforms the person. 2 CORINTHIANS 3:18 (ESV) says believers are "being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another."

That transformation happens as we behold the glory of the Lord. We become like what we worship. If the heart keeps staring at sin, self, fear, image, or bitterness, those things shape us. But as the Spirit turns our gaze to Christ, change begins deeper than outward behaviour.

This is encouraging because growth is often gradual. The verse says from one degree of glory to another. Many believers get discouraged because they are not instantly mature. But God is not only interested in quick appearances. He works truly, patiently, and deeply.

It is also challenging because we cannot expect Christlike transformation while feeding the heart on what opposes Christ. Beholding is not passive. What we give attention to forms desire.

ROMANS 13:14 (ESV) says, "put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh." That is a gracious command. Look to Christ, and do not keep feeding what He came to free you from.

Grace is not content to leave us unchanged. The Spirit transforms those who behold the Lord. Keep looking to Christ.

This means the Christian life cannot be reduced to trying harder in our own strength. We need a better vision, not just more pressure. The Spirit changes us as Christ becomes more precious, more central, and more beautiful to the heart. Discipline matters, but discipline without beholding can become dry effort. Look to the Lord in His Word. Worship Him. Consider His glory. Grace changes what it captures.

So pay attention to what is forming you. What you behold daily will not leave you untouched. Let the glory of Christ have the steady attention of your heart, and trust the Spirit to make you more like Him.
