Grace Is No Longer Grace

In ROMANS 11, Paul is speaking about God's gracious choosing of a remnant. His statement makes the contrast unmistakable: grace cannot be mixed with works as its basis. ROMANS 11:6 (ESV) says, "if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace."

That cuts down pride and lifts the weary. Pride wants to contribute enough to boast. Weariness fears it has not contributed enough to be loved. Grace answers both. Salvation is not God's applause for human achievement. It is His undeserved favour given according to His mercy.

This does not mean works do not matter. The Bible is clear that grace produces obedience. But works are fruit, not the root. They are evidence of life, not payment for acceptance. When we confuse that order, we either become proud of ourselves or crushed by ourselves.

EPHESIANS 2:10 (ESV) says believers are "created in Christ Jesus for good works." Good works matter deeply, but they flow from being created in Christ, not from trying to purchase grace.

Let grace be grace. Stop bargaining with God as if obedience earns His love. Stop resisting obedience as if grace excuses rebellion. The grace that saves freely also makes a new people. Receive it humbly, and let it teach you to live for Him.

This guards the heart from two dangerous errors. One error says, "I must work so God will accept me." The other says, "Because God accepts by grace, obedience does not matter." Both misunderstand grace. True grace humbles boasting and trains holiness. It frees us from earning, and it frees us for joyful obedience. When grace is allowed to be grace, Christ receives the glory and the believer learns to walk in freedom.

There is rest here, but it is not laziness. There is effort here, but it is not earning. Grace puts both in their proper place. We work because we are loved, not so that we might become loved.
