Do Not Miss the Grace of God

Grace must not be treated casually. HEBREWS 12:15 (ESV) says, "See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springs up and causes trouble."

That is a searching warning. The grace of God is not decoration on the Christian life. We need it desperately. Hebrews echoes DEUTERONOMY 29:18 (ESV), which warns of a root producing poisonous and bitter fruit when a heart turns away from the Lord toward other gods. The danger is broader than a resentful feeling. It is poisonous unbelief and apostasy taking root among God's people and spreading defilement.

The surrounding passage also warns through Esau's godlessness: he traded his birthright for a single meal. Grace must not be treated casually while temporary desire is treated as ultimate. A heart can slowly exchange holy privilege for immediate appetite and then discover that sin's promise was empty.

This warning belongs to the whole church: "See to it that no one" fails to obtain God's grace. Believers must watch over one another so that unbelief, idolatry, sexual immorality, resentment, or any other poisonous fruit is not allowed to settle quietly and spread. What is hidden underground eventually becomes visible.

Do not trade the grace of God for sin that offers immediate relief and lasting corruption. Bring wounds, desires, doubts, and temptations into the light. Receive correction while the heart is still tender. Encourage others to remain faithful. Let grace reach deeper than every poisonous root.

This does include ordinary bitterness and resentment, which can become poisonous when cherished. Scripture is honest about evil, betrayal, and pain, but no wound should be allowed to turn the heart away from God or defile others. Grace brings the wound under God's care and judgement. There may be boundaries, truth-telling, and time, but the heart must not be surrendered to poison.

Ask honestly whether any root of unbelief, compromise, idolatry, or resentment has become familiar enough to escape notice. Grace is able to reach deeper. The Lord can expose and remove the root before it bears more poisonous fruit.
