Blessed Is the Forgiven One

Forgiveness is not a small blessing. ROMANS 4:7-8 (ESV) says, "Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered."

Paul quotes David to show that righteousness before God is not earned by works. The blessed person is not the one who managed to hide sin successfully. The blessed person is the one whose sin God has forgiven and covered.

This blessing confronts our pride. We like to be known for strengths, not for mercy received. But the gospel humbles everyone. The forgiven are blessed because God has acted graciously, not because they built a record impressive enough to stand on.

It also comforts the honest sinner. Lawless deeds can be forgiven. Sins can be covered. The Lord does not invite us to pretend we are cleaner than we are. He invites us to trust His mercy more than our shame.

GENESIS 15:6 (ESV) says Abraham believed the Lord, and "he counted it to him as righteousness." Paul uses Abraham to show that justification has always rested on faith, not human boasting.

So rejoice with humility. Forgiveness should never make us careless; it should make us worship. Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord does not count against him.

That blessing becomes especially precious when conscience is tender. The forgiven person does not need to live pretending, hiding, or constantly trying to rewrite the past. God has spoken a greater word. This should produce honesty with Him and gentleness toward others. If our lawless deeds have been forgiven, we have no room for religious superiority. We stand by mercy, and mercy teaches us to worship low.

Forgiveness also gives courage to walk forward. We may grieve what sin has done, but we do not need to remain chained to the accusation that grace has answered. Blessed is the forgiven one.
